Blogging at 70mph

Disclaimer: I'm hammering this blog post into my phone as we drive down I-37 towards the coast. So it won't be my usual well-hyperlinked missive. I shall endeavour to dot the virtual I's once I get back to San Antonio.

It's been non-stop excitement at Darkness HQ for the past few weeks, as we've all been beavering away on a huge project. Literally!

The project is to cast not one, but two twelve-foot tall statues of Lady Justice for a Lawyer's shindig. This has required not only practical engineering skills and knowledge of large-scale sculpting techniques, but also a crap-ton of clay.

More details after the break!

The initial design was carved out by Sergio Guerra as a twelve inch maquette. This allowed for rough proportions to be determined, as well as client approval.

Once a stable wooden platform was bolted together, (by yours truly), a skeleton of steel piping, foam and chicken wire was carefully constructed, and the clay piled on.

Once the clay is hard enough to work with while remaining stable, sculpting can begin in earnest. After which the sculpt will be sealed with acrylic and multiple thin layers of silicone applied to create several moulds.

When the moulds are ready, they will be used to cast enough fibre-glass shells to create two full size statues. These pieces will be relatively lightweight and easy to transport. Relatively.

The full process has been and will be documented on my Flickr feed, once I get opportunity to tidy the steady stream of photos up!

Update: The Lady Justice work-in-progress photos now have their own Flickr Set.

For now, it's a much needed day off, so it's time to make the most of my fishing license again.

Let's hope I don't lose the reel this time!

Update the second: I caught things, but they were too small for nommage.

I probably should have mentioned that I was a passenger. ;)

I don't trust the roads over here. They're full of people driving on the wrong side.
